Ferry Song

In my troubled youth headed on that great journey
Said goodbye to my kinfolk walked on
Followed my footsteps down to the harbor
When the ferry came in I got on

I was headed, headed out into the wind
I was headed, headed out into the wind
From one side to the other, oh the boat went on
From one side to the other taking me where I belong

There was no one there to meet me, only mist and fog
And the only sound to great me, came from waves, gulls and dogs
When the sun came out and the fog did lift, she was standing there
On the other side of a footbridge, her smile was sweet, she was fair
Pulled like a magnet, drawn to her side
Like the pull of a moth to a candle flame, I lost myself to her light

I was headed, headed out into the wind
I was headed, headed out into the wind
From one side to the other, drawn to her face
From one side to the other, she was gone without a trace

So I rambled round that bustling town till war overseas broke out
I signed up as a foot soldier, spent the whole tour on the front
The bullets they were flying and I caught one in the side
The casualties were many and it seemed that I too would die
Like a cloud she appeared out of nowhere and put my hand in hers
And listened to the whole story till the heart swelled and burst

I was headed, headed out into the wind
I was headed, right back out there again
From one side to the other, oh the boat went on
From one side to the other taking me where I belong

I recovered slowly and sifted through my life
There were many convolutions and I tried to put them right
One day a letter came to me and it said my father was ill
I cried to think of his frailty, the heart was open still
I went down to the ferry, when she docked I jumped aboard
The gulls they were screechin as we left for the other shore

I was headed, headed out into the wind
I was headed, headed right out there again
From one side to the other, oh the boat went on
From one side to the other taking me where I belong
